Psalm 19 | August 16th

Message Overview
Three Great Witnesses: What Creation, Scripture, and the Saved Tell Us About God

God has not left the world without a witness. In Psalm 19, King David points to three powerful testimonies that God gives of Himself to all of humanity. Whether you are a lifelong believer or someone just beginning to ask questions about faith, these three witnesses speak directly to you.

What Does Creation Tell Us About God?

Psalm 19 opens with a bold declaration:

"The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge." - Psalm 19:1-2

David is saying something simple but profound: look up. The created world is not silent. It speaks constantly, without words, in every language, to every person on earth.

Can You Really Know God Exists Just by Looking at Nature?

Theologians call this the cosmological argument. The basic idea is this: nothing has ever come from nothing. When you look at the complexity and beauty of the universe, the only reasonable conclusion is that someone made it.

The Apostle Paul makes the same point in Romans:

"For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." - Romans 1:20

Creation is undeniable, uninterrupted, unspoken, and universal. There is no language barrier. There is no geographic barrier. Even a deaf person can see the sun rise, and even a blind person can feel its warmth.

A Personal Story: Finding God on an Offshore Oil Rig

As a college student who had walked away from faith, standing alone on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico with nothing but the horizon in every direction, the sight of the sun setting over the water made something undeniable clear. There was no accident here. Someone made this.

That moment of honest reflection led to a simple prayer: "God, you clearly exist. You have been good to me. You deserve to be worshiped. Help me find the right way."

Creation does not save anyone. But it does point us toward the question: if God is real, how do I find Him?

What Does the Bible Say About How to Find God?

After creation raises the question, Scripture provides the answer. David shifts in Psalm 19 from the skies to the Word:

"The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." - Psalm 19:7-8

Why Is the Bible Called a Precious Treasure?

David describes Scripture as more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey. That is not poetic exaggeration. It reflects what the Word of God actually does in a person's life.

Romans 10:17 puts it plainly:

"Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." - Romans 10:17

Creation tells us there is a God. Scripture tells us who He is, what He has done, and how we can know Him personally.

What Is the Gospel Message the Bible Teaches?

Many people grow up hearing Bible stories without ever hearing the clear message of the gospel. Here it is, drawn directly from Scripture:

  • "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." - Romans 3:23
  • "The wages of sin is death." - Romans 6:23
  • "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8
  • "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9

Hearing an articulate defense of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and then having someone open the Bible and explain these truths clearly can change everything. That is exactly what happened through the ministry of an apologist at a college campus and a faithful Campus Crusade staff member who sat down over lunch and opened First John:

"And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life." - 1 John 5:11-13

Not hope. Not wish. Know. That is the promise of Scripture to everyone who places their trust in Christ.

How Do Believers Serve as Witnesses to Others?

The third witness David highlights is the person whose conscience has been made clean through faith in Christ. He writes:

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14

David is praying that his life would reflect the God He serves. He asks to be kept from presumptuous sins, those he knows are wrong but might be tempted to pursue anyway. He wants to walk with a clear conscience so that his life gives testimony to who God is.

What Does Baptism Have to Do With Being a Witness?

Baptism does not save anyone. Trusting Christ saves. But baptism is the public declaration that you have placed your faith in Him. It is the saved person standing up and saying: this is real, this happened to me, and I want the world to know.

Second Corinthians 5:20 reminds us that all who trust in Christ are called to be ambassadors for Him. The believer's life, lived openly and honestly, becomes a third witness alongside creation and Scripture.

There is something powerful about hearing someone say, "Here is how God reached me." It is not just David's story. It is the story of every person who has ever looked at the sky and started asking questions, then found their way to the Word, and then met someone whose life pointed them to Jesus.

The Three Witnesses Working Together

These three witnesses build on one another:

  • Creation (the skies): Tells us God exists and cannot be ignored
  • Scripture (the commandments): Tells us who God is and how we can be saved
  • The saved (the conscience): Shows the world what a life transformed by faith looks like

General revelation, what we see in creation, is enough to show us our need for God. But as theologian Charles Ryrie noted, only faith in Christ is sufficient to save. That is why the Word matters, and that is why the witness of believers matters.

Life Application

This week, consider which of these three witnesses God has used most in your own life. Maybe it was a moment in nature that made you stop and acknowledge He is real. Maybe it was a verse someone shared with you. Maybe it was watching the life of a believer and thinking, "I want what they have."

Now ask yourself: are you being that third witness for someone else?

Your challenge this week is to share your story with one person. It does not have to be polished. It just has to be honest. Tell someone how God got your attention, what you heard or read that made it clear, and what changed when you trusted Him.

Ask yourself these questions as you prepare:

  • Have I personally trusted Christ, or am I still searching for the right way to worship God?
  • Is my life reflecting the God I say I believe in, or am I walking in ways that contradict my faith?
  • Who in my life needs to hear how God reached me, and am I willing to tell them?

Creation declares His glory. Scripture explains His grace. And the saved are called to make it personal for a world that is still looking up at the sky and asking questions.
Day 1: Written in the Sky
Devotional
Have you ever stood outside on a clear night and just looked up? There is something about a sky full of stars that stops you in your tracks. It is hard to stare into that kind of vastness and walk away unchanged. God designed it that way. Long before churches, long before Bibles were printed and placed in hotel nightstands, He hung the heavens as His first and most universal message. No language required. No theology degree needed. Just eyes and a willingness to wonder. Every person on earth, no matter where they live or what they believe, has access to this witness. The complexity of a single cell, the precision of the seasons, the way a newborn grips your finger for the first time. None of it happened by accident. Something this intricate demands a Maker. Creation does not give us every answer, but it asks the most important question: if God is real, how do I find Him? That question, honestly asked, is the beginning of something life-changing. If you have never paused to let creation speak to you, try it today. Step outside. Look up. Listen. God has been talking all along.

Bible Verse
"The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands." - Psalm 19:1

Reflection Question
When was the last time you let the natural world around you point you toward God, and what might you be missing by moving too fast to notice?

Quote
"No thing ever came from nothing. Scientifically speaking, no thing ever came from nothing. And so when we look across the globe and we see the intricacies of this creation, we have to say, now wait a minute, somebody had to put this thing together."

Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see Your fingerprints in the world You made. Let creation remind me daily that You are real, You are near, and You are worth knowing.
Day 2: More Than Gold
Devotional
Creation raises the question. Scripture answers it. Once you sense that there must be a God, the next honest question is: who is He, and how do I reach Him? That is not a small question. People have spent entire lifetimes searching in the wrong places, trying to earn their way, or simply giving up. But God did not leave us guessing. He gave us His Word. Not as a rulebook designed to make life harder, but as a gift. Psalm 19 describes Scripture as perfect, sure, right, and pure. It restores the soul. It makes the simple wise. It brings joy to the heart. And then comes this remarkable comparison: the Word of God is more desirable than gold, sweeter than honey. Think about what you chase after in a given week. Your time, your energy, your attention all go somewhere. What if the thing you were actually hungry for has been sitting on your shelf the whole time? The Bible is not just ancient literature. It is the living voice of a God who wants to be known. Pick it up today with fresh eyes. Let it speak. You might be surprised what you find.

Bible Verse
"The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." - Psalm 19:7-8

Reflection Question
If you truly believed the Bible was more valuable than anything money could buy, how would that change the amount of time and attention you give to reading it?

Quote
"Creation tells us, hey, there’s got to be a Creator. Well, who is He? How do we find Him? How do we worship Him? What’s right? What’s wrong? How would we then live? He says we’ll go to the Scripture."

Prayer
Father, give me a hunger for Your Word that surpasses my appetite for anything else. Teach me to find in Scripture the answers my heart has been searching for.
Day 3: The Gift You Cannot Earn
Devotional
Here is the part of the story that changes everything. Scripture does not just tell us that God exists. It tells us the truth about ourselves, and that truth is humbling. Every person who has ever lived has fallen short. Not most people. Not bad people. All people. That includes you, and it includes me. The consequence of that is serious. But the story does not end there, and this is where the good news becomes genuinely good. While we were still in our mess, still far from God, Christ died for us. Not because we had cleaned ourselves up. Not because we had earned it. Simply because He loved us. Salvation is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift, received through faith. You cannot work your way to it, and you cannot lose it by not being impressive enough. You simply trust. You believe that Christ paid what you could not pay, and you receive what He freely offers. If you have never taken that step, today is a good day. And if you have, let this be a reminder of just how extraordinary the grace is that you are standing in right now.

Bible Verse
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9

Reflection Question
Is there any part of you that still feels like you need to earn God’s love or prove yourself worthy of it, and what would it look like to fully rest in His grace today?

Quote
"God had already demonstrated His own love toward me and that while I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me. I didn’t know that."

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for paying a debt I could never repay. Help me to stop striving and start trusting, resting fully in the grace You have already given me.
Day 4: You Can Know
Devotional
One of the quietest fears many believers carry is this: what if I am not really saved? What if I have not done enough, believed hard enough, or been good enough to actually make it? God anticipated that fear, and He addressed it directly. The Apostle John wrote his letter with a specific purpose: so that those who believe in Christ can know, not hope, not wish, not wonder, but know that they have eternal life. That kind of certainty is not arrogance. It is trust. It is taking God at His word and refusing to let doubt have the final say. Faith is not a feeling that comes and goes. It is a decision to anchor yourself to what God has promised, even on the days when you do not feel it. If you have placed your trust in Christ, your eternity is secure. Not because of your track record, but because of His. He does not go back on His word. He does not change His mind about you. Let that settle in today. You are not just hoping for eternal life. If you are in Christ, you have it. Walk in that confidence, and let it change the way you live.

Bible Verse
"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life." - 1 John 5:13

Reflection Question
What would change about the way you live today if you woke up with complete, unshakeable confidence in your standing before God?

Quote
"These things I’ve written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God in order that you may know that you have eternal life. Not hope, not wish, not think."

Prayer
Lord, replace my doubt with the certainty You have already promised in Your Word. Help me to walk today not in fear, but in the freedom of knowing I am Yours.
Day 5: Your Life Is the Message
Devotional
Creation points to God. Scripture explains how to know Him. And then there is a third witness, one that is walking around in your shoes right now. Every person who has trusted Christ is called to be an ambassador. Your story, told honestly and openly, is one of the most powerful tools God has. People can debate theology. They can argue about science and origins. But they cannot argue with a changed life. David closes Psalm 19 with a prayer that is worth making your own. He asks that his words and the thoughts of his heart would be acceptable before God. It is a prayer of surrender, a desire to live in a way that reflects who God is and what He has done. You do not need a platform or a pulpit to be a witness. You need a willingness to live openly and to share what God has done in your life when the moment comes. Someone in your world is still searching. They have seen the stars. Maybe they have even cracked open a Bible. What they need now is to see the real thing up close, a person whose life has genuinely been changed. Be that person. Your story matters more than you know.

Bible Verse
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14

Reflection Question
Who in your life is still searching for God, and what is one honest, practical way you could let your story point them toward Him this week?

Quote
"There’s creation. Look to the skies. There’s the commandments. Look to the scripture. And there’s the clean conscience. Look to the saved to tell you how to be saved."

Prayer
Lord, make my life a testimony worth watching. Let my words and my actions reflect Your grace so clearly that others cannot help but ask where it comes from.
