Father's Day | June 21st
Message Overview
What Kind of Son or Daughter Are You to a Perfect Father?
We spend a lot of time thinking about what kind of Father God is. But there is a question worth sitting with: what kind of son or daughter are we to Him? Romans 8 gives us a powerful picture of what it means to be adopted into God's family and how we are called to live it out.
You Are No Longer Obligated to Sin
In Romans 8:12-17, Paul lays out a foundational truth for every believer. We are no longer debtors to the flesh. We do not owe sin anything.
"Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." - Romans 8:12-13
When you place your faith in Christ, you are brought into God's forever family. You belong to Him. The problem is that even after becoming His child, we can still choose to live as if we belong to the old life. That is exactly what the enemy wants. He does not need a catastrophe to derail you. He just needs you to go back to living like you used to.
What Is the Difference Between Being a Child and Being a Son or Daughter?
There is an important distinction in this passage between two Greek words. In verse 16, the word for "children" is techna, meaning born ones. It describes the natural bond between parent and child. But in verse 14, the word for "sons" is huios. That word goes further. It describes a child who has stepped into their legal status and privilege to represent the Father.
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." - Romans 8:14
You can be a child of God and still live like a stranger to the family. Think about the difference between "that kid" in the neighborhood and "Bill's son." One is not representing the values they were raised with. The other is a clear reflection of their family. God wants us to be the kind of sons and daughters that when people see us, they see the Father.
What Does It Mean to Be Led by the Spirit?
When you are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. Each day, you have a choice. You can yield to the Spirit or you can take back control and live by the flesh. Being led by the Spirit is not passive. It involves spending time in God's Word, worshiping together, speaking scripture to one another, and serving. These are the things that keep us walking in step with the Spirit rather than drifting back to old patterns.
The Spirit does not force you. He does not coerce you. God did not create robots. He gives you the choice to follow, and that choice matters deeply.
What Does It Mean to Cry Out "Abba, Father"?
"For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father." - Romans 8:15
Abba is an intimate term. One way to understand it is "Father, my Father." It carries closeness, warmth, and zero fear. Because of adoption into His family, you can approach God without dread, even when you have gotten it wrong. He does not disown His children. He does not put you on a trial period. He sees you coming from far off and runs to meet you.
Sometimes we live as though God wants nothing to do with us after we have failed. But that distance is never on Him. It is on us. He has not moved.
What Rights Do You Have as a Child of God?
An Intimate Relationship
You do not have to earn access to God. You do not have to clean yourself up first or perform for Him. The moment you believe, He says welcome to the family.
Real Life, Starting Now
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." - John 3:16
Everlasting life does not start when you die. It starts the moment you believe. The Holy Spirit living inside you is a taste of what is coming. You do not have to wait to experience real life in God.
His Provision
God takes care of His children. Those "somehow we made it" moments are real. He provides through circumstances, through protection, and through the people around you. When you serve someone in the church, you are not just being kind. You are part of God's plan to provide for His family.
His Wisdom
"All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
God does not want you to stay a spiritual child forever. He wants you to grow up into a mature son or daughter who is capable and equipped for what He has called you to do.
What Does It Mean to Be an Heir and a Co-Heir with Christ?
"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together." - Romans 8:16-17
Every believer is an heir. Everlasting life is yours. But there is also the calling to be a co-heir with Christ, and that comes with conditions. It is connected to suffering with Him.
That suffering does not always mean persecution. Sometimes it is as simple as the moment you tell someone you got saved and they laugh at you. It is the daily struggle that comes from no longer belonging to the world. When you endure that, you are bringing honor to your Father. You are, in a small way, sharing in what Jesus experienced on this earth.
And God says it is worth it. He has more for those who are faithful. More than everlasting life, which is already the greatest gift imaginable. He says there is still more.
The Prodigal Son: A Picture of the Father's Heart
In Luke 15, Jesus tells the story of a son who walks away from everything, wastes it all, and eventually comes to His senses. He heads home expecting to be treated like a servant. But the Father sees Him from far off, because He was watching and waiting. He runs to his son, embraces him, and restores him completely.
That is the heart of God toward you. No trial period. No proving yourself first. Just come home.
If you have been wandering, He is not standing at the door with a list of conditions. He is standing there saying, come on back. The life is real. The relationship is always secure.
Stop Trying to Earn What You Already Have
You are already in the family. It was never about your performance. Rest in that. But do not stop there. Ask yourself whether you want to be a good son or daughter who represents Him well. Not to earn anything, but because you know the Father and you want people to see Him when they look at you.
Let Him provide for you. Let Him walk with you. You do not have to carry everything alone to prove you are strong. He gave you everything you need in His Word. Go look it up. His wisdom is real and it does not get old.
Life Application
This week, choose one area of your life where you have been living by the flesh rather than by the Spirit. Maybe it is how you respond to conflict, how you handle stress, or how you talk about your faith around others. Bring it to the Father without fear, and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you differently in that area. You are already His child. Now live like a son or daughter who wants to represent the family well.
Ask yourself:
God is not waiting for you to get it all together. He is waiting for you to come home. And when you do, He runs to meet you every time.

- Am I yielding to the Spirit daily, or am I taking back control and living like I used to?
God is not waiting for you to get it all together. He is waiting for you to come home. And when you do, He runs to meet you every time.
Day 1: Welcome to the Family
Devotional
There is a moment that changes everything. It is the moment you believe in Jesus Christ for everlasting life. From that point forward, you are not a guest, not a visitor, and not on probation. You are in. You belong to God's forever family, and nothing about that is based on how well you perform. This is the foundation everything else builds on. Before we can talk about how to live, we have to settle who we are. And who we are is this: children of God, brought in by grace, held by a Father who does not change His mind. Some of us grew up in homes where love felt conditional. Where belonging depended on behavior. Where one wrong move could cost you your place at the table. If that is your story, this truth is especially for you. God's family does not work that way. You did not earn your way in, and you cannot mess your way out. The moment you believed, He said welcome. And He meant it forever. This week, we are going to explore what it looks like to not just belong to this family, but to actually live like it. To walk in the identity that is already yours. But today, just let this sink in. You are His. That is where everything starts.
Bible Verse
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
Reflection Question
If you truly believed your place in God's family was completely secure and had nothing to do with your performance, how would that change the way you approach Him today?
Quote
"We don't have to earn it. We don't have to show off for him. We don't have to do tricks. We just believe. He says, welcome into the family."
Prayer
Father, thank You for making a way into Your family through Jesus. Help me to rest in the truth that I belong to You, not because of what I have done, but because of what He did. Amen.

Day 2: You Are Not Who You Used to Be
Devotional
Belonging to God's family is a gift. But there is an enemy who would love nothing more than for you to forget that. His strategy is not complicated. He wants you to go back to living like you did before you knew Christ. To act like a stranger to the family you belong to. Paul addresses this directly in Romans 8. We are no longer debtors to the flesh. That old way of living does not have a claim on us anymore. We are not obligated to sin. We are not trapped by old habits, old patterns, or old identities. Those things lost their authority the moment the Holy Spirit took up residence in us. But here is the honest part. Just because something has lost its authority does not mean it stops knocking on the door. Old habits are familiar. They feel comfortable, even when they are harmful. The pull back to who we used to be is real. This is why Paul says we have a choice to make. Every single day. We can yield to the Spirit or we can take back control. One leads to life. The other leads us further from the Father who is waiting with open arms. You are not who you used to be. Do not let anyone, including yourself, convince you otherwise.
Bible Verse
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." - Romans 8:14
Reflection Question
What is one area of your life where you are still living as if the old you is in charge, and what would it look like to hand that area over to the Spirit today?
Quote
"What he wants is for you to go back to living like you used to be. Instead of being a son, living as a son or a daughter. He wants you to look like you're outside the house, that you're a total stranger to the family that you belong to."
Prayer
Holy Spirit, remind me today that I am not who I used to be. Give me the strength to choose Your leading over the pull of old habits, and help me walk in the freedom that is already mine. Amen.

Day 3: More Than Just a Name
Devotional
There is a difference between belonging to a family and actually representing it. Most of us know this from experience. Two kids can grow up in the same home, with the same parents, and turn out completely different. One reflects everything the family stands for. The other seems to have forgotten where they came from. God does not just want us to carry His name. He wants our lives to reflect His character. Romans 8:14 uses a specific word for sons that carries the idea of stepping into your legal status and privilege as a mature representative of the family. It is not just about being a child. It is about growing into someone who looks like the Father. That kind of growth does not happen by accident. It happens through time in God's Word, through worship, through community with other believers, and through serving others. These are not boxes to check. They are the rhythms that keep us walking in step with who we now are in Christ. Being led by the Spirit is not passive. It is an active, daily decision to stay close to the One who is shaping us into His image. You already have the name. Now let your life tell the story of who your Father is.
Bible Verse
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Reflection Question
When people observe your daily life, what do they learn about your Father, and is there a gap between the family you belong to and the life you are currently living?
Quote
"The word sons is the word yos. And that's more than a bond. That is a child stepping into their status and legal privilege to represent the Father, to represent the family and the responsibilities as an adult."
Prayer
Lord, I want my life to reflect You clearly. Show me the areas where I have settled for just carrying Your name, and give me the desire to grow into someone who truly represents You well. Amen.

Day 4: He Was Watching for You
Devotional
One of the most beautiful details in the parable of the prodigal son is easy to miss. When the son finally comes to his senses and starts the long walk home, his Father sees Him from far off. Not from the doorway. From far off. That means the Father was watching. Waiting. Scanning the horizon every day, hoping today would be the day his child came home. That is the heart of God toward you. Not a Father standing at the door with a checklist. Not a Father waiting to say, prove it to me first. A Father who runs toward you the moment you turn back in His direction. No conditions. No trial period. Just an embrace and the words, everything I have is yours. You are home. Maybe it has been a long time since you have felt close to God. Maybe you wandered, and the distance has started to feel permanent. It is not. God never disowns His children. He does not stop being your Father because you stopped acting like His child. He is watching for you right now. And the moment you turn toward Him, He is already running. Come home. The relationship is always secure.
Bible Verse
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." - Romans 8:14
Reflection Question
Is there an area of your life where you have been staying away from God because you feel like you need to clean yourself up first before coming back to Him?
Quote
"The Father sees Him from far off. Why would the Father see Him from far off? Because he was waiting for him to come back. Because he wanted him to come back."
Prayer
Father, thank You for watching and waiting for me even when I wander. Help me to stop letting shame keep me at a distance, and give me the courage to simply come home to You today. Amen.

Day 5: Stop Earning What You Already Have
Devotional
Here is a trap that even mature believers fall into. We know we are saved by grace. We know we did not earn our way into God's family. But somewhere along the way, we start trying to earn our way into His favor. We perform for Him. We keep score. We feel close to God when things are going well and distant when we fail. But that is not how this family works. Your standing before God is not tied to your performance. It never was. You are His child because He said so, and He does not take it back. Romans 8 closes this loop beautifully. Yes, living as a mature son or daughter costs something. There will be suffering. There will be days when following Christ is hard. But that cost leads somewhere. It leads to a glory that we cannot even fully comprehend yet. The life you are living for Him today is building toward something eternal. So stop trying to earn what you already have. Rest in who you are. And then go live it out, not to impress God, but because you are His and you want the world to know it. You are already in the family. Now go live like it.
Bible Verse
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." - Romans 8:14
Reflection Question
In what ways have you been treating your relationship with God as something you need to maintain through performance rather than something He has already secured for you?
Quote
"Stop trying to earn what you already have. You're already in the family when you believe in Christ for salvation. Rest in that. I'm his child. It was never about your performance. It was never about your standing."
Prayer
Father, help me to stop striving for what You have already freely given me. Teach me to live from a place of rest in Your love, and let that overflow into a life that genuinely reflects You. Amen.
