Sermon Overview
Flip the Script: Living Out Your New Identity in Christ
Have you ever felt caught between who you used to be and who God says you are now? The tension between old patterns and new possibilities can feel overwhelming. But what if God has already given you everything you need to "flip the script" on how you live?
Understanding Your Position Before the Practice
Before diving into any list of Christian do's and don'ts, we must understand our foundation. We're not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works. As Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And that not of yourselves is a gift from God, not as a result of works that no man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that he prepared beforehand that we would walk in them."
This isn't about practicing religion or hoping our good works outweigh our bad ones. It's about living from our new identity in Christ.
What Does It Mean to Be "In Christ?"
When you place your faith in Jesus, several incredible things happen:
As Ephesians 1:13 states: "In him, in Christ, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed, you were sealed in him with the Holy Spirit of promise."
From Old Path to New Path
The world system has imprinted itself on your heart, mind, and conscience. Ephesians 2:1-2 describes our former condition: "And you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air."
But now you have a new path. The power to live differently comes from the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer. This is something even Old Testament prophets didn't fully understand - that God would welcome all who place their faith in Christ into His forever family, the Church.
What Does It Mean to "Flip the Script?"
To flip the script means to do something completely differently or in the opposite way from how it was usually done. The world has taught us certain patterns, but God calls us to live by entirely different principles.
As Philippians 2:13 encourages us: "It is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." We're not doing this in our own strength, but by the power God supplies.
Four Ways to Flip the Script
1. Commit to Truth
World's Script: Do whatever it takes to get ahead - lie, steal, cheat if necessary.
God's Script: "Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another" (Ephesians 4:25).
This includes all forms of lying, from outright contradictions to carefully crafted deceptions. We live in a culture that feeds on deception, but as believers, we're called to be people of truth.
Why is truth so important? Because lies and innuendo tear apart communities, separate loved ones, and destroy relationships. If we actually spoke truth to one another in love, many of our relational problems would disappear.
2. Commit to Community
World's Script: Look out for number one because nobody else will.
God's Script: "Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others" (Philippians 2:4).
The phrase "one another" appears 100 times in the New Testament, with 59 specific commands about how to relate to each other. We're called to love one another, honor one another, serve one another, encourage one another, and forgive one another.
God's design is that you'd be so connected to your believing community that when people see you together, they think you're blood related. In a sense, you are - through the blood of Christ.
3. Commit to Harmony
World's Script: Don't get mad, get even.
God's Script: "Be angry and yet do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. And do not give the devil an opportunity" (Ephesians 4:26-27).
Notice this is actually a command to be angry. There are times when anger is appropriate - Jesus himself got angry. Anger is an emotion designed to move us to action. The key is not letting anger control you or lead you to sin.
The instruction not to let the sun go down on your anger means don't just let issues fester. Take time to understand what you're angry about and determine the best way to respond without making things worse.
Remember: seek to win the person, not the argument.
4. Commit to Generosity
World's Script: The one with the most toys wins.
God's Script: "He who steals must steal no longer, but rather he must labor performing with his own hands what is good so that he will have something to share with one who has need" (Ephesians 4:28).
This isn't just about not stealing - it's about working so you can be generous to others. First Timothy 6:17-18 instructs: "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share."
If you live in North America, you're among the wealthy of this world. The question is: what are you doing with what God has entrusted to you?
The Power to Change
This transformation isn't about trying harder or practicing religion. It's about understanding who you are in Christ and living from that new identity by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As 1 Peter 4:11 reminds us: "Whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies."
Life Application
This week, choose one area where you need to "flip the script." Perhaps you've been shading the truth in certain situations, isolating yourself from community, harboring anger, or being stingy with your resources. Remember, you're not trying to earn God's favor - you already have it through Christ. You're living out of your new identity.
Ask yourself these questions:
The goal isn't perfection but transformation - allowing God to work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure. You have everything you need in Christ to flip the script and live differently than the world around you.

- In what area of my life am I still following the world's script instead of God's?
- How can I commit more fully to truth, community, harmony, and generosity this week?
- Am I trying to change in my own strength, or am I relying on the power of the Holy Spirit?
- What would it look like for others to see Christ's character reflected in my relationships and actions?
The goal isn't perfection but transformation - allowing God to work in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure. You have everything you need in Christ to flip the script and live differently than the world around you.
Day 1: A New Identity, A New Way
Devotional
Have you ever tried to change a habit and found yourself falling back into old patterns? The struggle is real, but here's the beautiful truth: God doesn't ask us to change ourselves. When we place our faith in Jesus, we receive a completely new identity. We're not just forgiven; we're adopted into God's family, sealed with the Holy Spirit, and given every spiritual blessing. This isn't about trying harder or practicing religion - it's about understanding who we already are in Christ. The transformation begins with recognizing that we're no longer defined by our past mistakes or current struggles. We have a new nature, new power, and a new purpose. God has already equipped us with everything we need to live differently.
Bible Verse
'For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.' - Ephesians 2:8-10
Reflection Question
What old patterns or identities from your past are you still allowing to define you instead of embracing who God says you are?
Quote
"We're not saved by good works, but now we have an opportunity in the strength that God provides to walk in a new way of life."
Prayer
Father, help me to truly understand my new identity in Christ. Give me the courage to let go of who I used to be and embrace who You've made me to be.

Day 2: Flipping the Script
Devotional
The world has its own playbook for how to live, but as believers, we're called to something radically different. Think about how the world operates: deception for personal gain, self-centeredness, revenge when wronged, and hoarding resources. But God invites us to flip the script entirely. Instead of following the world's patterns, we can choose truth over lies, community over selfishness, forgiveness over revenge, and generosity over greed. This isn't about white-knuckling our way to better behavior. It's about recognizing that we have the Holy Spirit's power to live differently. When we understand our position in Christ, our practice naturally follows. We're not trying to earn God's love; we're responding to the love we've already received.
Bible Verse
'So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.' - Ephesians 4:17
Reflection Question
In what specific area of your life is God calling you to 'flip the script' and do things His way instead of the world's way?
Quote
"You have an opportunity to flip the script. Do something completely differently or in the opposite way from the way it was usually done."
Prayer
Lord, show me where I'm still following the world's patterns instead of Your ways. Give me the strength to choose Your path, even when it's countercultural.

Day 3: The Power of Truth
Devotional
Truth has incredible power to build relationships, while lies have the devastating ability to tear them apart. In our families, friendships, and communities, speaking truth creates trust and deepens connection. Yet how often do we choose the easier path of small deceptions, half-truths, or avoiding difficult conversations? God calls us to be people of truth because He is truth. When we commit to honesty in our relationships, we're reflecting His character. This doesn't mean being harsh or unkind, but it does mean being genuine and authentic. Truth-telling requires courage, especially when it's uncomfortable. But consider this: if we could all speak truth to one another in love, how many relationship problems would simply disappear? Truth builds the foundation for genuine community.
Bible Verse
'Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.' - Ephesians 4:25
Reflection Question
Is there a relationship in your life where you've been avoiding a truthful conversation that could bring healing and deeper connection?
Quote
"If we actually spoke the truth to one another, do you realize that the need for a counselor would disappear?"
Prayer
God, give me the courage to speak truth in love. Help me to be honest in my relationships while showing grace and kindness.

Day 4: Anger Without Sin
Devotional
Anger isn't always wrong - sometimes it's exactly the right response to injustice, hurt, or wrongdoing. The key is what we do with that anger. God's Word actually commands us to 'be angry and yet do not sin.' This means anger itself isn't the problem; it's how we handle it that matters. When we let anger fester, we give the enemy a foothold in our lives. When we seek revenge, we're playing by the world's rules. But when we process our anger quickly, seek resolution, and pursue reconciliation, we're living God's way. The goal isn't to win arguments but to win people. Don't let the sun go down on your anger - address it, deal with it, and move toward healing. This protects both your heart and your relationships from the destructive power of unresolved conflict.
Bible Verse
'In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.' - Ephesians 4:26
Reflection Question
Is there unresolved anger in your heart that you need to address before it gives the enemy a foothold in your life?
Quote
"Seek to win the person, not the argument."
Prayer
Father, help me to handle my anger in healthy ways. Give me wisdom to address conflicts quickly and seek reconciliation rather than revenge.

Day 5: Generous Hearts
Devotional
God's heart is incredibly generous, and as His children, we're called to reflect that generosity. This goes beyond just giving money - it's about having a generous spirit in all areas of life. Instead of hoarding our time, talents, and resources, we can look for opportunities to bless others. When we work, it's not just to meet our own needs but to have something to share with those who are struggling. This mindset shift transforms everything. We move from scarcity thinking to abundance thinking, from self-protection to self-giving. Generosity is actually a form of worship - it acknowledges that everything we have comes from God and belongs to Him. When we give generously, we're participating in God's nature and experiencing the joy that comes from blessing others. This is the ultimate flip of the script from the world's way of accumulating to God's way of distributing.
Bible Verse
'Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.' - Ephesians 4:28
Reflection Question
How can you cultivate a more generous heart this week, looking for opportunities to bless others with your time, talents, or resources?
Quote
"Instead of giving the devil an opportunity, give yourself an opportunity to be generous."
Prayer
Lord, help me to have a generous heart like Yours. Show me opportunities to bless others and give me joy in sharing what You've given me.
